BOW CHEST
Battery Park City Residence · New York · 2025

sapele, fiddleback maple, brass, suede, birch plywood 58 x 12 x 18 in.

I was inspired by the way string instruments balance expressive wood with structural restraint. Designed for a violinist, I wanted the Bow Chest to carry that same logic.

The fiddleback maple in the lid is left naturally bowed, yet a thin ribbon-striped sapele band cuts through its center, holding its expressive figure in check. A solid brass rod spans the concave curve of the lid like a string stretched between the ends of a bow, functioning as both the pull and the structural element that holds the wood in tension.

Wrapped in dark suede, the exterior remains visually quiet. The opposing curves of the bowed body and concave lid never fully settle in the closed position.

Inside, plywood dividers shaped like violin bridges organize sheet music. Fiddleback maple and birdseye sapele are again cut, thinned, and ordered into removable platforms for open scores during practice.
